A winter storm system will swing through the area this weekend bringing rain and cold temperatures.

Showers are forecast for tonight and through the weekend with a chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain showers are expected to linger throughout most of next week.

Temperatures are expected to be in the high 40s and low 50s during the day and to drop down into the mid to low 30s at night.

AccuWeather, the private weather forecasting service, predicts that a thick cloud cover and winds will prevent the Lodi area from experiencing freezing temperatures this weekend.

The storm is expected to bring snow in the Sierra Nevada, which has had none to scant snow this season so far.

Temperatures are expected to drop even lower next week with Accuweather predicting a chance of snow and rain in the Lodi area on Thursday morning.

Rotary Club to hand out free dictionaries

The Lodi Rotary Club and board of education will distribute 2,500 dictionaries next week to every third-grade student and third-grade teacher in the Lodi Unified School District.

The goal of this donation is to assist all third-grade students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing the students with their own personal dictionaries, according to a press release issued by the district. The dictionaries are a gift from the club to each student to use at school and at home for years to come.

This will mark the fourth year that the Lodi Rotary Club has donated new dictionaries to Lodi Unified third graders.
