Attention, sixth-graders: Have you gotten your Tdap booster shot? Parents of current sixth-grade students are urged to get their child's Tdap vaccine before school ends this year, and take a copy of the child's shot record or other documentation to school as soon as possible.

A new law was created last year following the whooping cough outbreak of 2010. The law requires all students entering seventh grade to provide the schools with proof that they have been immunized against pertussis (whooping cough). The Tdap booster vaccine safely protects against three dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial illness spread by coughs and sneezes.

School health officials want all students to be protected against disease and able to attend school on the first day without any disruptions, according to Dr. Karen Furst, a health officer with the San Joaquin County Public Health Services.

For more details about the new school vaccination requirement and general information on pertussis, visit www.shotsforschool.org.

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
