A 55-year-old Lodi man was killed early Thursday morning after losing control of his Costco truck and slamming into an overpass embankment on Interstate 5 near Twin Cities Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim was identified as Bruce Land, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
Land, driving north on I-5 at about 1:10 a.m., crossed the center divider and both southbound lanes, crashing on the embankment to an overpass over Dierssen Road, which crosses over I-5 north of Twin Cities Road, CHP spokesman Michael Bradley said.
Land was pronounced dead at the scene, Bradley said. No vehicles were struck as a result of the crash, he added.
Both southbound lines and the Dierssen Road overpass were closed to traffic for several hours because Costco products fell out of the truck and onto the roadway, Bradley said. Traffic was diverted into the center divider, he said.
Land was raised in Galt as one of 11 children.
He and his wife Patricia, of 33 years, moved to Lodi seven years ago. They have two children, Ged and Abby Land, both of Lodi.
Not only was driving a truck his job, it was his passion and something he truly loved, although fishing ran a close second, according to his neice Jenny Gilley.
But Land’s world revolved around his 9-year-old granddaughter, Madison Land of Lodi, Gilley said.
