United Congregational Christian Church will have a special Communion service Thursday night featuring the music of the popular Irish band, U2.
The service, to begin at 7 p.m., will be called a U2charist, Pastor Jack Dawson said. The church's band will perform U2 music instead of traditional hymns.
The U2charist is being conducted to support the eight goals set by the United Nations in 2000. U2, and especially lead singer Bono, are very supportive of the millennium goals, Dawson said.
The goals are to:
• Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. • Achieve universal primary education. • Promote gender equality and empower women. • Reduce child mortality. • Improve maternal health. • Combat HIV, AIDS, malaria and other diseases. • Ensure environmental sustainability. • Develop a global partnership for development.
The church is at 701 S. Hutchins St. at Tokay Street, Lodi. For more information, call the church at 368-1955 or visit www.u2charistlodi.com.
On Saturday, the church invites the community to a "crop walk" beginning at 9 a.m. at the church. An offering will be taken, with 25 percent of the money to be donated to the Lodi Salvation Army and Lodi Community Services Center. The remainder will go toward "Church World Service," which is active in crisis ministries in the United States and overseas, Dawson said.
