A Lodi father who thought a stranger tried to kidnap his son now says the incident was a misunderstanding.

P.J. Vaz spoke to the man who approached his 11-year-old son after dark on Monday outside the family’s home on the 1100 block of Interlaken Drive. The man went to the family’s home and said he was merely interested in Vaz’s home surveillance system, Vaz said.

Vaz said he didn’t know how the man was aware of his home surveillance system.

On Friday, the Lodi Police Department confirmed Vaz’s story, adding that the man lives near Vaz.

The man said he noticed some suspicious vehicles in the neighborhood and hoped to use Vaz’s video surveillance system to obtain license plates of the vehicles, according to Sgt. Eric Versteeg.

Versteeg added that the man was cooperative during a follow-up interview with Lodi police officers, and called the incident a “misunderstanding.”
