Two men were convicted of murder and other charges in the slaying of 20-year-old Acampo resident Britani Coberly in 2009.

Alfonze Fitzhugh, 24, faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to Deputy District Attorney Robert Himelblau. Fitzhugh and Robert Barnes, 22, were convicted Friday morning of first-degree murder, attempted murder and attempted robbery, Himelblau said.

In addition, Fitzhugh will receive penalty enhancements of committing a murder while attempting a robbery. A San Joaquin County Superior Court jury also determined that Fitzhugh aided and abetted the shooting, Himelblau said.

Barnes was the one who personally discharged the firearm, Himelblau said. He also faces life without parole.

Coberly, 20, was shot in the back and killed shortly after she and her boyfriend arrived at their Acampo home on the east Highway 99 frontage road south of Peltier Road on Nov. 18, 2009.

The Coberly family is scheduled to speak in court when the two men are sentenced. An Oct. 29 court date was set, but it will need to be changed because Himelblau will be unavailable that day.
