Artists and the public are invited to help create a Great Blue Heron Community Build Bench through a community build workshop, and Lodi is looking for experienced tile-workers to help guide the design.

The final bench will be installed at a proposed garden near Post Office Plaza in Downtown Lodi, on South School and Oak streets.

All practicing professional and emerging artists and design teams residing in Lodi and surrounding areas are invited to apply. Artists competing for this project must supply photos and references of at least two projects that are less than five years old. Duties will include mentoring a large group of volunteers, hand making tiles — including the glazing and firing process — and installing the finished mosaic panels. Selected artists will be compensated.

The art theme of the bench is educational and must communicate the natural flora and fauna of the Mokelumne River watershed. The Great Blue Heron is a mascot intended to remind people that the City of Lodi’s untreated street runoff drains into the Mokelumne River.

For more information, an application and guidelines, email Sabrina Willis-Bartram, arts coordinator for the city of Lodi, at swillis@lodi.gov or call 209-333-6800, ext. 2458.
