The first day of school in July? Yes — for Lodi Unified School District students

School is back in session on Friday in Lodi; middle school orientation today

Posted

Once upon a time, school started the day after Labor Day. But in recent years, classes have been moved up to late August, then mid-August. And in Lodi Unified School District, classes will begin on Friday — and July isn’t over yet.

Moreover, seventh-graders in Lodi Unified’s middle schools will get a head start by showing up today for student orientation.

There are two exceptions to Friday’s official start of school: Joe Serna Jr. Charter School begins on Monday, and Middle College High School opens its doors on Aug. 5.

Today, Principal Sheree Flemmer expects up to 400 parents to attend orientation at Millswood Middle School to hear with their children what seventh grade is like and how it will differ from elementary school.

From 8:14 to 10:01 a.m. today, students and parents will hear a presentation from Flemmer and other administrators, and eighth-grade students from the conflict management group will give a tour of the school.

At Lodi Middle School, today’s orientation day is for students only, Principal Scott McGregor said. Eighth-grade leadership students, led by teacher Cynthia Niño, will conduct the orientation.

Lodi Middle School students will meet in the cafeteria at 7:55 a.m. to receive some general information. Then they will break into small-group activities conducted by student leaders, McGregor said.

“These activities will help the seventh-graders get to know each other and form relationships,” McGregor said in an email. “They are also designed to allow the seventh-graders to form relationships with the eighth-grade leaders.”

Lodi Unified will have two-week breaks from Sept. 30 through Oct. 11, Dec. 23 through Jan. 3 and March 17 through March 28. The last day of school will be May 30.

Other area school districts get a later start. Oak View, a K-8 school in Acampo, doesn’t open its doors until Aug. 15. New Hope School, a K-8 school in Thornton, starts the same day, as does Arcohe School in Herald. Galt schools begin on Aug. 19.
