Julie Fukunaga, an eighth-grade student at Elkhorn Elementary School in Lodi, took second place at the 2011-12 California State Junior High School Spelling Bee earlier this month.

The other San Joaquin County participant in the State Bee was Hanna Nakahara, an eighth-grader at Delta Charter School in New Jerusalem Elementary School District, who took seventh place.

Fifty-four seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students from 27 counties throughout California competed in the state championship on May 12 at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael.

Fukunaga also competed last year after being named the 2010-11 San Joaquin County Spelling Bee Champion.
