We’re sure that you have been to plenty of birthday parties, but have you been to one honoring a 106-year-old woman?

You’ll get your chance on Thursday night, when Lodi’s Sadie Jauch is honored by friends, relatives and dignitaries. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at English Oaks Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1260 W. Century Blvd.

Jauch, whose birthday is actually Friday, is sharp as a tack mentally, said Dave Yancey, a family friend who is helping organize Thursday’s birthday bash at the church.

There will be special presentations from Farmers & Merchants Bank, where she has banked for more than 80 years, and A&W Root Beer, which set up shop in Lodi as the very first A&W restaurant in 1919. That year also marks the year Jauch (pronounced “Yow”) moved to Lodi from Parkston, S.D.

“She loves root beer floats,” Yancey said.

A&W’s corporate office will send Jauch a letter and supply root beer and ice cream for the party, Yancey said.

The billboard outside the Lodi Avenue A&W restaurant has an announcement commemorating Jauch’s birthday.

There will also be at least one surprise for Jauch in which the News-Sentinel is sworn to secrecy until Thursday’s party.

Born March 15, 1907, Jauch will have lived 38,690 days by Friday, Yancey said. She graduated from Lodi Academy in 1926, was a nurse for nearly a half-century and has read the News-Sentinel for more than 90 years.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl.
