Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, voted in favor of the fiscal cliff bill approved by Congress late Tuesday night, but he voted against granting members of Congress a pay raise.
"While there is still significant work to be done, including providing support for the victims of (Superstorm) Sandy, I am glad that we were able to avoid tax hikes for many middle-class families," McNerney said in a written statement. "I hope that in this new Congress, we will see much more bipartisanship and compromise as we continue to address our budget concerns."
Regarding Congress receiving a pay raise, McNerney said, "I personally voted against a congressional pay raise twice this week. At a time when so many local families are still struggling in today's economy, granting members of Congress a raise is inappropriate. We need to be focused on creating jobs and improving our economy."
