This year’s high school graduation season kicks off Thursday with three local ceremonies.

Students and their friends and family will be the first to enjoy the new Grape Bowl, but recently installed synthetic turf has altered some of the post-graduation traditions.

Guests will not be allowed to go onto the field. Instead, they can meet students in a parking lot off Calaveras Street at the end of the ceremony.

Seniors are also prohibited from wearing heels, eating sunflower seeds or chewing gum at this year’s graduations held at the Grape Bowl. Those not wearing flat-bottom shoes will be sent home and not allowed to paricipate, since school officials have said going barefoot is not an option.

Tickets are required for entry into most ceremonies. Seating reconfiguration in the Grape Bowl has limited the number of available seats.

This year’s ceremonies include:

Liberty High School, 10 a.m., Hutchins Street Square, 125 N. Hutchins St., Lodi.

Independence High School, 1 p.m., McNair High School, Mamie Starr Theater, 9550 Ronald E. McNair Way, Stockton.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
