Galt may be about to become a two-McDonald’s city. If plans are approved by the city in the coming months, the restaurant will be built at the southeast corner of East Stockton Boulevard and Twin Cities Road. Like the city’s other McDonald’s, this one will be located right off Highway 99.

“The fact that they have submitted a site plan application means that they are serious about building the store, but nothing in development is ever certain until the store is actually built,” City Manager Jason Behrmann said.

It is an area about to see a lot of new development, with the Twin Cities roundabout project scheduled for summer and Walmart expected to break ground later this year.

The city has been receiving a lot of development interest for properties along Twin Cities Road now that Walmart is close to pulling its building permits, Behrmann said.

“We are excited for all of the development potential along Twin Cities, because it will bring more revenue and jobs to the city,” he said.

McDonald’s site plan review application was submitted to the city earlier this month. Planning staff is in the process of reviewing it and providing comments, according to Behrmann.

Once the site plan is nearly complete, the applicant typically prepares and submits the construction drawings and improvement plans. Once these are approved, they can receive their building permit for the restaurant.

The project does not require approval from either the Planning Commission or the Galt City Council, since the property is already zoned for commercial use.

“The McDonald’s is an excellent location that will serve the local population, but also pull a lot of freeway traffic that will bring in additional revenue,” Behrmann said, adding that the restaurant will also improve a corner that has been home to a vacant gas station for many years. “This prominent entryway into the city will be improved dramatically with the construction of the roundabouts and the new development on the corner.”

Meanwhile, the original McDonald’s on Pine Street at the Central Galt Highway 99 exit was recently been remodeled and now boasts a double drive-thru. Additionally, the parking lot has been revised and facade improvements made to modernize the building’s appearance.
