Keep your eye on the chapel roof at Lodi Academy high school. Within the next month, an array of solar panels will be installed to provide up to 15 percent of the school’s energy.

The school paid the up-front costs of the project with a $40,000 rebate through the city of Lodi. The rebate was one of six offered by the city to local businesses to use “green” and sustainable business practices.

Savings from generating solar energy will go to monthly payments for the project, paying off the whole tab in 10 years.

“This makes it doable,” said principal Doug Brown. “It’s one-tenth of the energy needed for the school, but it’s a beginning, and we are very grateful to the city for it.”

Cal Valley Solar in Galt will install a 22.2 kilowatt array covering half of the chapel roof. If more funding comes along in the future, there is room to expand the array.

Lodi Academy was one of the last groups to apply for the rebate and got the good news the very next day. The project must be operational within 60 days, according to the terms of the grant.
