A man who robbed a local sandwich shop narrowly escaped arrest after driving through area vineyards Monday night.
The suspect robbed the Subway at the corner of Lower Sacramento Road and Kettleman Lane, said Officer Shad Canestrino of the Lodi Police Department.
The man, described as a white male with a scruffy beard, walked into the Subway around 8 p.m. and pointed a revolver at an employee, police said. He left with an undisclosed amount of money and headed toward Stockton, Canestrino said.
A pursuit began near Harney Lane and appeared it would end quickly when the woman who was driving the vehicle the suspect was in pulled over and got out, police said. But the suspect got in the driver’s seat and took off near Curry Avenue and Armstrong Road, Canestrino said.
Although a perimeter was quickly set up and a California Highway Patrol helicopter was called in to assist, neither subject was detained and the vehicle was not recovered, police said.
The suspect is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 150 pounds, police said.
Anyone with information on the robbery is urged to call the Lodi Police Department at 209-333-6727 or Lodi Area Crime Stoppers at 209-333-6771.
