Tokay High School freshman Julie Fukunaga took first place in the 16th annual San Joaquin County Junior High Spelling Bee on Wednesday. The runner up was Hanna Nakahara, a ninth-grade student at West High School in Tracy Unified School District. The winning word was "perambulation."
Both students will participate in the California State Junior High Spelling Bee Competition on May 11, 2013 at Miller Creek School in San Rafael. The SJCOE Educational Foundation will pay the $350 entry fees.
Elementary students competed, too. The winner was Jill Rafert, a sixth-grade student at Annunciation School, and the runner-up was Jack Ford, a sixth-grade student at Ripon Elementary in Ripon Unified School District.
The winning word for that category was "saboteur."
Both students will move on to participate in the California State Elementary Spelling Bee Championship on April 20, 2013 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.
