On Thursday, Lodi's GrapeLine will offer free rides on the fixed-route system in honor of the National Dump the Pump Day.
The city and other transportation agencies want to encourage people to not drive on that day and try mass transit, Paula Fernandez, Lodi's transportation manager, stated in a news release.
"The city operates an efficient, low-cost way for people to get around Lodi," Fernandez stated. "By offering free rides on June 16, we're hoping to introduce more people to this service and help them save money when gas is $4 a gallon."
The city's regular fare is $1.25. Seniors, people with disabilities and Medicare cardholders pay 60 cents. For more information on the bus routes, go to www.lodi.gov/transit.
The American Public Transportation Association is sponsoring the day. The organization estimates that individuals in a two-person household can save on average more than $10,000 annually by using only one car.
