Lodi and Woodbridge fire departments responded to a call of a residential fire at 8:16 p.m. Saturday.
The fire began in a front corner of a yellow house on the 2000 block of Lower Sacramento Road, just south of Century Boulevard, said Battalion Chief Ron Penix.
The Lodi Police Department closed that section of the road to traffic for over an hour.
Firefighters got the flames under control within 20 minutes, but smoke continued to billow into the sky until after 9 p.m. There was heavy damage to the roof, attic and interior of the home.
Next door neighbors Joyce and Earlene Manus were at home when the fire started. A passing motorist stopped to knock on their door and tell them to get outside. They reported seeing flame engulf the front end of the home.
Earlene Manus said a family of six live in the house. None were at home during the blaze.
It was not yet clear what caused the fire, said Penix.
Live wires were down on an electrical pole next to the home. Workers from PG&E were on site to address the damage.
