In southern San Joaquin and northern Stanislaus counties, the letter "L" in the word "almond" is silent and the first letter is pronounced more like "cat."
Or as Van Houten put it, "We grow almonds on trees, and we knock the 'L' out of them and they become 'aaamons.'"
The pronunciation of the popular nut created confusion one time at a Chinese restaurant in downtown Stockton, when Van Houten ordered "aaamon chicken." The waitress couldn't figure out what he was talking about, but Van Houten suddenly realized that he should go with the more traditional urban pronunciation.
He finally got his almond chicken.

There's a whole lot of Dutch in Adrian Van Houten's blood. Many people of Dutch descent have settled in Escalon and Ripon, and Van Houten's family is no exception.
An Escalon resident since 1955, both sides of Van Houten's family came to the United States from Holland. His son married a Dutch woman, and so did one of his daughters. Another daughter has a Dutch fiancé.
