Officers arrested five suspected Norteño gang members accused of threatening a man and brandishing a firearm, according to Lodi police.

Lodi residents Jesus Diaz, 18, Roman Avila, 18, and three juveniles were accused of driving by a house on Maple Street around 9 p.m. on May 1, shouting racial slurs and threatening to kill a man and his family, said Lodi Police Detective Larry Fluty.

At that point, one of the juveniles pulled out a firearm, witnesses told police.

Later, one of the juveniles stepped out of the car and tried and failed to stab the victim, who wasn’t a gang member, Fluty said.

According to witnesses, the other four surrounded and assaulted the victim, then left. When police arrived, the victim declined medical attention.

Fluty said this was an example of gangsters trying to intimidate civilians living in a Norteño-controlled neighborhood.

“These gangsters were trying to exert their power over the neighborhood,” Fluty said.

Diaz is being held in San Joaquin County jail on $485,000 bail and suspicion of assault with a firearm and street terrorism.

Police are still looking searching for another person suspected of being involved in the incident, Fluty said.
