The city of Galt hopes to extend its afterschool program through the summer months, but it will cost approximately $33,000 for staff and supplies over the next two years. If enough students are enrolled, the expense will be offset by tuition.

The Galt City Council is scheduled to vote on the expense at its regular meeting on Tuesday. If approved, it would establish the first-ever “School’s Out!” Academic and Recreation summer program.

It would be an extension of SOAR, the afterschool program the city currently operates at local schools through a joint-use agreement with the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District. More than 75 students are enrolled.

There have been requests for the city to offer a summer program that would be available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, according to Armando Solis, the city’s special projects administrator.

Approximately 30 students are expected to attend. A weekly fee of $125 would be charged to participants to help offset the cost of salaries and supplies.

Revenue is estimated at $37,500, compared to the operating cost of $33,338.

The Galt City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 380 Civic Drive, Galt.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
