The Toronto Star newspaper has reported that Canada’s National Defence officials have given the thumbs down — for now at least — to providing a transport plane to fly three of the Toronto Zoo’s elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society, saying the earliest a move could happen would be the fall.

PAWS headquarters is located in Galt.

The statement was issued last week.

Zoocheck, an animal rights organization, is working alongside PAWS to move the trio of pachyderms. The organizations approached Canada’s Department of National Defence earlier this year to borrow a military transport plane for the move. It is being funded by former game show host Bob Barker, a longtime friend of PAWS.
