A mix of rain, hail, gusting wind and cold temperatures — and possibly a funnel cloud — will strike Lodi today. But the chaos should be brief, with sun and serenity returning to the area by Wednesday.

A cold front will move into the area today, bringing with it periods of rain and temperatures reaching the low 50s during the day, said Ken Clark, a meteorologist with Accuweather.com, a private forecasting service.

As the day progresses, conditions will worsen.

Thunderstorms carrying scattered showers, hail and gusting winds are expected to move through Lodi beginning this afternoon and stretching into tonight. There's also a small chance that a funnel cloud could develop, Clark said.

Snow levels will likely fall to 2,000 feet, low enough to create treacherous conditions for drivers traveling over the Altamont Pass. Clark added that the Grapevine, a portion of Highway 99 in the southern San Joaquin Valley, could also close tonight.

The Sierra will receive five to 10 inches of snow.

Dodge Ridge, a ski resort in Tuolumne County, is expecting six to 12 inches of snow by Wednesday, according to Dodgeridge.com. Kirkwood Mountain Resort near Lake Tahoe, isn't preparing for as much activity. The resort will receive light and intermediate snow showers, according to winter.kirkwood.com.

Today's storm will pass quickly.

Sunshine is expected for most of Wednesday, and high temperatures will reach the upper 50s.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
