The Galt Market was the victim of arson early Wednesday morning, with a women’s restroom being completely destroyed and a men’s restroom barely escaping the same fate.
Galt police believe two males, who were caught on video going to and from the building that houses both restrooms, are behind the crime.
The fire occurred sometime between 3:30 and 4 a.m., according to Lt. Brian Vizzusi, of the Galt Police Department. A security guard on the premises noticed the fire and called 911, Vizzusi said.
The reaction was swift from the Cosumnes Community Services District, which provides fire service for Galt and Elk Grove. That fast reaction was key in limiting the fire’s damage, said Rick Holmes, battalion chief with Cosumnes CSD.
“Had we gotten there two or three minutes later, we would have lost a lot more of that building and perhaps other adjoining buildings,” Holmes said.
The majority of the restroom building was not badly damaged, Holmes said, but the women’s restroom was a total loss. Vizzusi estimated the city-owned building suffered between $10,000 and $15,000 worth of damage.
“The female restroom needs to be completely reconstructed,” Holmes said.
Fire officials believe the suspects made an unsuccessful attempt to burn the men’s restroom as well. Holmes said an item resembling a phone book was found in that restroom; the item was warm to the touch when fire crews arrived, and may have been used to try to start a second fire.
Police are seeking the two males seen in the surveillance video, and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
