The Lodi Police Department announced on its Facebook page late Saturday that Ray Samuels, who served as interim chief of police before current Police Chief Mark Helms took over, has died. He was in his late 50s.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., the department posted the following message:
“The Lodi Police Department is sad to announce the passing of former interim chief of police, Ray Samuels. While Chief Samuels was only with the department for a short period of time, he quickly became loved and respected. His contributions to our department will not be forgotten.”
Lodi Police Lt. Tod Patterson said he believes that Samuels died of a heart attack in the Palm Springs area.
“He was a great guy,” Patterson said. “Everybody really, really took to him and he led us through a transition. We are extremely heartbroken.”
Samuels was a police officer in Vallejo and Concord as well as serving as Newark’s police chief. He was also interim chief in Menlo Park.
