Building permits issued by the city of Galt in the last three months are up approximately 16 percent from the same period last year. Specifically, there has been an increase in permits issued for swimming pools, patio covers and solar panels, according to city manager Jason Behrmann.
The total number of annual building permits peaked at 308 in 2005, but has declined remarkably since 2007 with the economy.
The city issued an annual average of 192 single-family building permits from 2000 through 2006. However, as of July, approximately 1,280 new residential units are currently under construction, approved or in the application process, according to the city's planning department.
Staff has been meeting with a prospective developer for the property surrounding Liberty Ranch High School on the edge of city limits, which could add 1,200 to 1,500 homes when it is built.
Meanwhile, businesses are also moving forward with projects.
Planning staff has approved remodel of McDonald's, including installing a dual drive-thru and removing the playground area. The corporation is expected to submit a request for a building permit in the near future, according to Behrmann.
