Here are the top graduating students for 2013 from Lodi High School:

Colin Anderson

Cumulative grade point average: 4.535

Parents/guardians: Neil and Ruth Anderson

Post-graduation plans: I will attend Brigham Young University and study chemical engineering. I plan to pursue a career in that field.

Clubs and activities: Football, wrestling, cross country, track and field, Science Olympiad, California Scholarship Federation Seal Bearer, SJAA Mendoza Outstanding Wrestler Award, Sac-Joaquin Section Dale Lacky Scholarship Athlete Award, Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award, Eagle Scout, Latter-day Saints Four-Year Seminary Graduate, Homecoming Court, 2013 Pinnacle Award.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory is when I had a teacher appreciation dinner and I had about seven teachers and their families at my house for dinner. They received awards.

Special thanks: I would like to thank Mr. DeGrandmont because of all the effort he puts into his class, and (because) he cares about his students. Mrs. Heinrich and Mr. Wood, because they have served as an extended family for me. My mom, because she always covers for me when I forget things and has raised me. My father because he has supported our family and always has some fun project. Lastly, I want to thank all of my teachers and coaches. They have all done so much for me, and they are part of the reason I am the person I am today.


Matthew Mellor

Cumulative grade point average: 4.53

Parents/ guardians: Grant and Sara Mellor

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology and study mechanical engineering. I plan to create a start-up company.

Clubs and activities: California Scholarship Federation Seal Bearer, Distinguished AP Scholar, speech and debate, varsity badminton, Scholar Athlete, Science Olympiad.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory is going on a 72.4-mile bike ride on cruisers with Mayra Mejia.

Special thanks: I would like to thank my grandma for revising my college essays and the rest of my family for being supportive.


Joseph Vanderlans

Cumulative grade point average: 4.465

Parents/guardians: Eric and Keri Vanderlans

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend the University of Southern California, majoring in mechanical engineering.

Clubs and activities: Swimming and water polo, French Club, California Scholarship Federation Seal Bearer, student adviser at World of Wonders Science Museum.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory is my French Club trip to Europe and being a member of the dream team.

Special thanks: I thank my brother and sister for their support.


Maria Barba

Cumulative grade point average: 4.452

Parents/guardians: Ramon Barba Jr. and Socorro Barba

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend Stanford University and major in biology, and later medical school to become a general practitioner.

Clubs and activities: President of the Interact Club, California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, Garden Club, Flash Mob Club, junior volunteer at Lodi Memorial Hospital, math tutor, AP Scholar with Honor, National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar, State Seal of Biliteracy.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory is establishing long-lasting friendships.

Special thanks: I would like to thank all of my teachers, friends and family, because it was through their knowledge and insights that I was capable of further delving into a subject.


Kenneth Day

Cumulative grade point average: 4.419

Parents/guardians: Nicholas Day and Michele Day

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, majoring in mathematics (and) then moving into actuary.

Clubs and activities: California Scholarship Federation, National Honors Society, varsity soccer (freshmen and sophomore years), 1st Team All-League (freshman and sophomore), MVP offensive player (sophomore).

Favorite memory of high school: There are too many to remember, but mainly all of the high school sporting events. There were several good games I’ve witnesses and been a part of.

Special thanks: I would like to thank all of my past teachers and anyone who has helped prepare me for the next steps in my life. College will be tough, and hopefully the hard work I’ve put into high school will pay off in college.


Karla Hanson

Cumulative grade point average: 4.409

Parents/guardians: Richard and Patricia Hanson

Post-graduation plans: My career goals include going to college to study veterinary medicine and photography. Also, I want to someday work on a large cat reserve on another continent.

Clubs and activities: Principal’s Most Distinguished Honors Award (all four years), Pinnacle Team of 2013 San Joaquin and Calaveras County, member of Torch Honor Society 2009-2010 (Oregon).

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory of high school would have to be meeting different and new people. Also, my junior year AP Comp class was amazing. We didn’t just learn how to take a standardized test, we learned about life and real world situations. Life isn’t all about grades, it’s about moments and memories.

Special thanks: I’d like to thank my mom for instilling in me common sense, a good work ethic and teaching me to never take anything for granted.


Brittany Kim

Cumulative grade point average: 4.395

Parents/guardians: Henry and Michelle Kim

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend the University of Southern California, majoring in biological sciences. I hope to become a cardiac surgeon.

Clubs and activities: California Scholarship Federation vice president (four years), Science Club (three years), varsity golf (four years) co-captain, Boys and Girl’s Club, NorCal Youth in Action, Scholar Athlete.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory of high school was dissecting a pig in AP biology and being a member of the dream team.

Special thanks: I would like to thank my parents and brother for always pushing me to be the best that I could be, my family for their constant prayers and my favorite teachers and close friends for keeping me sane these past years.


Kristen Schlader

Cumulative grade point average: 4.395

Parents/ guardians: Kim and Michelle Schlader

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, majoring in business administration. I plan to have a career in business, accounting and the FBI.

Clubs and activities: Track and field (varsity letter earned), Stand Club (vice president), Lodi Youth Commission (secretary), Teen Lead Program, California Scholarship Federation, Vinewood Community Church Youth Group, Interact Club, National Honor Society (secretary), assistant coach for Tritons Summer League Swim Team, Animal Friends Connection volunteer, AP Scholar Award, Junior Scholar Athlete Award, Principal’s Most Distinguished Honors.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memories of high school are dissecting a pig in AP biology and dressing up for Spirit Days.

Special thanks: I would like to thank my parents and grandparents for pushing me to try my best at everything. I would not be where I am today without their support and encouragement.


Kevin den Hartog

Cumulative grade point average: 4.372

Parents/guardians: Barbara and Pieter den Hartog

Post-graduation plans: I plan to attend California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. I am studying wine and viticulture so I can return to the family farm and continue my parents’ legacy.

Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory was my French Club trip to Europe and being a member of the dream team.

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
