More than a week after Election Day, the race for an open seat in the California State Senate's 5th District is still neck-and-neck.

With ballots still being examined, Republican Bill Berryhill leads Democrat Cathleen Galgiani by 1,465 votes, and the gap has narrowed since Election Day, according to Austin Erdman, San Joaquin Registrar of Voters. The elections offices in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties are working together to count and verify the ballots, he said.

Erdman said that they hope to know the winner of the district before Thanksgiving.
