Lodi police arrest 16 during warrant sweeps

Posted

In an effort to rid Lodi’s streets of several wanted criminals, officers spent Friday pursuing suspects with recently issued warrants. Lodi police officers arrested 11 people with warrants and made 16 arrests total during citywide sweep, according to Lodi Police Sgt. Eric Versteeg.

“This was just an effort to be proactive and to take some people off the streets,” Versteeg said. “We’ll get them off the streets for at least a little while and give people a better quality of life.”

Most warrants were for drug- and property-related crimes, both of which have spiked in Lodi since 2012.

“Drug-related criminals often turn into property-related criminals because they need to get money in order to feed their addiction,” Versteeg said.

Police focused their efforts on some motels along Main Street, where they made five arrests Friday.

“There’s a dense population of crime in that area,” Versteeg said. “It’s very cheap for people to stay, and people can stay for a day or a week or a month.”

Lodi police conduct warrant sweeps several times each year.
