Two Lodi officers graduate from leadership academy

Two Lodi police officers graduated Thursday from the Los Angeles Police Department West Point Leadership Program.

Lt. Chris Piombo and Sgt. Steve Carillo join seven other police employees who have previously graduated from the program.

The 164-hour course focuses on various ways to look at leadership and challenges in law enforcement organizations, according to Lodi Police Capt. David Main.

The program was formed in 1994 when the LAPD and the West Point Military Academy collaborated to gather ideas on how to improve leadership skills.

Previous Lodi police graduates are captains Main and Gary Benincasa; lieutenants J.P. Badel, Chet Somera, Virgil Monroe and Steven Price; and Special Services Manager Jeanie Biskup.

Rio Vista bridge closures to continue

Rainy weather has extended the need to close the Highway 12 bridge at Rio Vista though Dec. 14. The California Department of Transportation is closing the bridge from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday though Thursday.

Closures are needed so work crews can gain access for regular bridge maintenance.

Travelers heading to points east of the bridge are asked to take westbound Interstate 80 to soutbhound Interstate 680 across the Benicia-Martinez bridge and then east to Highway 4. Traffic heading west need to take Highway 160 south to the Antioch Bridge onto Highway 4 west and then north to Interstate 680 over the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. Continue north on Interstate 680 to Interstate 80 eastbound to Highway 12.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
