The Cosumnes Community Services District's fire department, which serves Galt and Elk Grove, extended offers of employment to 10 fire recruits.

The recruits, who will begin training on April 15, will assist in managing current and projected vacancies due to attrition, lower the expenses in the fire department's overtime budget and provide some much-needed relief in their goal to address the overall structural deficit in the district, according to district officials.

The Cosumnes Fire Department has not hired firefighter/paramedics in five years and is 12 short of its full complement of 141 firefighter/ paramedics, according to the district. More retirements are expected in the next year.

The department projects a reduction in operating costs of about $500,000 per year, as absences will no longer have to be filled by firefighter/ paramedics on overtime.
