A Lodi man was in a medically induced coma early this morning at Lodi Memorial Hospital after nearly drowning in the middle of Lodi Lake, according to Lodi police.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, may have attempted suicide, according to police Sgt. Doug Chinn. Today is his 27th birthday.
The man drove his car to the north end of Laurel Avenue, just east of Lodi Lake, took off his clothes, took a large wad of currency and burned it before swimming nude to the middle of the lake, Chinn said.
A passerby saw him at 6:37 a.m. and called 9-1-1, Chinn said. Two Lodi firefighters put on life jackets, swam about 60 yards and brought the man to shore within about seven minutes, Lodi Fire Department Battalion Chief George Juelch said.
The man wasn’t breathing when he returned to shore, Juelch said, so paramedics from American Medical Response performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. He was breathing again before being taken to Lodi Memorial, Juelch said.
