Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is continuing to spread across California, public health officials said Friday, with the number of cases in both San Joaquin and Sacramento counties so far this year nearly double what the counties confirmed for all of 2013.
Statewide, the California Department of Public Health has counted 2,649 cases from the start of the year through last Tuesday. In April alone, more than 800 people from Eureka to Escondido contracted the disease, according to Dr. Ron Chapman, the state’s health officer.
