Breanna Brown says doesn’t lie to her father, but she had to this weekend in order to surprise him.

A 2nd Class Petty Officer for the U.S. Navy, Brown kept her father, Kelly Brown, completely in the dark until he and his wife showed up at The Dancing Fox. Stationed at the Pentagon, Breanna Brown flew to California Saturday night and spent night with a friend in Lockeford.

Surprising her father was easy. He and his wife (Breanna’s stepmother), Shelli Brown and her brother, Billy, 8, do the same thing every Sunday. First they attend a service at First United Methodist Church. Then they go to The Dancing Fox to have a bran muffin. Kelly Brown’s pretty much addicted to bran muffins, at leas the way The Dancing Fox makes them.

Wearing her Navy uniform, Breanna Brown hid in the wine-tasting room until her dad, stepmother and little brother showed up.

After an employee tipped Breanna that her father had arrived, she walked out of the wine-tasting room and gave Kelly Brown a big hug.

“I was totally shocked,” he said. “I welled up.”

Breanna, a 2005 Lodi High School graduate, has served in the Navy for six and a half years in such locations as Iraq, Sicily, Guantanamo Bay and an area of Africa near Somalia. Now she is a flag writer at the Pentagon with duties ranging from writing thank-you letters to writing speeches. She said she isn’t allowed to say much more about what she does at the Pentagon.

She is scheduled to be promoted to 1st Class Petty Officer next week.

Breanna Brown is grateful to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization which provides emergency financial and other assistance to families of service members.

Her dad, Kelly, moved to Lodi from Galt in the late 1990s. He is a certified public account is incoming president of the Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club.

Breanna Brown has enjoyed her Navy career and plans to remain in the Navy until she has to retire. She will be in the Lodi area until Sunday.

Dennis: Thanks for pointing that out. I've changed the headline to refer to her specific rank.

LNS, a Navy Petty Officer is not an Officer. Better to refer to her as a Sailor, US Navy Sailor, or Petty Officer.

And to Petty Officer Brown, thanks for your service.
