Before Tuesday’s election, San Joaquin Delta College school board candidate Lisa Turner said she went to as many of the college’s functions as possible. She got out and met constituents and tried her best to get her name out there.
Her efforts paid off, and when all the votes came in early Wednesday morning, Turner was declared the winner over Frederick Wentworth for the Area 7 seat on the board, which represents Manteca-Escalon.
“I was just excited and pretty excited when I found out,” Turner said.
Turner, a businesswoman who owns and runs a drug and alcohol recovery center, Alternative Solution, in Stockton with her husband, got 54.5 percent of the votes (55,131 votes) from San Joaquin, Sacramento and Alameda Counties. Wentworth, a former educator and retired superintendent of the San Joaquin County Office of Education, earned 45.5 percent of the vote (46,105).
Turner, a Lathrop resident, will replace outgoing Delta Trustee Ted Simas, who is retiring after 16 years of service on the board.
The Area 7 race was the only seat on the ballot for the seven-member board. No one ran against incumbents Taj Khan, the Lodi representative, and Janet Rivera, the North Stockton representative, so both will retain their seats.
Turner will take her place on the board in January and is already excited to get started.
“I am looking forward to just getting in line with what’s going on and I am hoping to work together with the board,” Turner said. “I want to get a good solid footing on what is need and where we are headed.”
Turner also said she is looking forward to helping the college in its search for a permanent president. Currently, Susan Cota is serving as interim president until Delta finds someone to replace former president Raul Rodriguez, who left for a chancellorship at a Southern California community college district in August.
Applications are being now being accepted for the post through Jan. 18, 2011. The college is hoping to have the position filled by April 1, 2011.
