The move of a trio of elephants from the Toronto Zoo to the Performing Animal Welfare Society may be delayed until spring,
Newspapers in Canada have reported a zoo veterinarian has concerns about what he says is active tuberculosis at the San Andreas site the pachyderms are set to be moved to. PAWS’ headquarters are in Galt.
The organization has several locations that serve as a refuge for aging animals. In addition to elephants, PAWS also houses tigers, lions and other animals.
The Toronto City Council voted last October to send the elephants to PAWS, but critics say the vote was taken late at night, without zoo staff input and without knowledge of the sanctuary’s tuberculosis concerns.
But PAWS founder Pat Derby said practices are in place to keep affected elephants in quarantine until they pass a number of TB tests.
