The number of Hispanic students in school districts has nearly doubled and now accounts for about 60 percent of the total growth in public school enrollment across the nation.

Since 1990, this growing trend has created many specialized programs aimed at reaching out to this specific student body, both socially and academically. Some programs go one step further in reaching out to their parents, as well.

In response to most of the other comments, I think that there certainly is a problem with illegal immigrants (and there are so many, if you don't notice it then you are walking around blindfolded) but it is because the families are moving here illegally and having many many children here that the problem begins to affect the school systems, and the reason that the schools are receiving funding to cater to them is because the children born here even to illegal immigrants are legal citizens, so they ARE entitled to something at school because their parents don't speak any English and there isn't anywhere else they can learn it. I think the adult programs to reach out to the parents were a good idea, even if we aren't happy about how they're spending our hardworking tax dollars, but I think that with such a complicated issue as this the public schools are doing the best they can.

Wow, there were certainly many what I would consider "racist" comments to this article, of course seeing as how it's about race that wasn't a surprise. Living in Lodi I have to say I DEFINITELY feel like a minority in a foreign country, sometimes I can't even go to a store and find someone who speaks English EMPLOYED THERE to help me find something and it can become very frustrating. It is even more frustrating to know that in many of the public schools there are children of ALL races who are fluent in English and suffering when a teacher has to take time that ought to be spent on valuable lesson plans to go back and cater to the students who don't speak or understand the language, and it absolutely does happen. This means there are students being robbed of their education in a publicly funded school paid for by their parents the tax payers! How fair is that?

To Bry: But we should be calling them what the Mexicans call them. SQUATTERS. No self-respecting Mexican would ever do what these illegals do. So lets call them, what they are: SQUATTERS. I received a telephone call from a Mexican client today. I told them about this article and they laughed. What they like most about America is the the losers and Squatters are sneaking North and the crime and gangs goes with them. If they gangbang in Mexico they are shot by the policia, no questions asked, don't collect you welfare check. A possible solution?

This invasion of illegal aliens has been going on for so many years and our corrupt government has made no serious attempt to stop it. To the contrary they have pandered to and helped Mexico invade America. This effort coupled with the dollar collapse brings our dollar value closer to the Canadian and Mexican currency. And of course this makes it easier to promote a new single currency for all three nations. The Amero will be the new currency for America, Canada & Mexico under the North American Union (NAU). Bush signed the (SSP) Security Properity Partnership with Mexico and Canada in 2005. We are losing our soverignty, rights and free enterprise as government continues to grow and control more industry and our lives. This is a plan and it will get worse. You are seeing the final days of our great nation as we know it. Mr. Hussein Obama will be president along with the egocentric selfminded Biden as VP and after a short time you will all see the middle class diminsh as socialism flourishes. Not that McCain would be much better as both parties are corrupt.

Immersion is the best way to learn "a foreign" language. If someone is here, WE do not need to provide them (pay for) with special programs that enable them to become co-dependent leeches that are ruining/have almost ruined our great country. Rewards should be given for living within one's means, working hard, and providing for one' family. Rewards should not be given to baby factories, wic recipients, welfare recipients, and frequent fliers at the local E.R.! Want to see it get worse, elect OBAMA!

I love the phrase "undocumented immigratnt"! It's a polite, sugar coated and make anyone GAG word for "People who refuse to comply with another countries laws. It means invading that country, and taking what you want from that country, without the need to learn its Laws, Customs, Language. It means discovering or being taught by others how to get the most "Freebies" from January to december. What freebies you ask? I'm glad you asked. At the corner of Main Street and Pine is the Adopt-A-Child program. They encourage the community to "Donate Brand New Bicycles" for children in need. Please call them and find out the Date someone can pick up a bicycle for their child, once they've filled out an application. Then I dare you to drive by on that day and count how many hispanic mothers are in line, compared to how many whites! Adopt-A-Child's website is: http://www.adopt-achild.org/ I encourage you to donate with your heart my friends. So many are in need. To me tho, it seems countless hispanics are taking advantage of the kindness of others.

Sneaking into America and hiding amongst "Amigo's or Relatives", and displaying NO INTENTION of becoming a legal citizen is wrong. Shame on any reader who thinks otherwise! Which Spanish language do these new immigrants speak? I know many Mexicans who can't understand them. I have a new client in Mexico and she gave me an earful about how terrible they are. Why is that? Is this patriotic Mexican a racist? US liberals need to start reading and travelling, they will soon find that the old liberal pc propaganda is incorrect. There are many old local families from Brazil or Spain. Ask them what they think about the squatters. In Winters, CA is a community of Spaniards. Ask them what they think of the bastardization of the word "hispanic". They will tell you proudly--- "not those people", they have never been to Spain.

Many of the homilies spun by the liberal press is that Americans are "racist" against recent illegal immigrants from Mexico. How can they explain why so many Mexicans hate the squatters we see sneaking across the border. Mexico is not run by squatters, it is held back by them. If the squatters would somehow disappear, many of the economic problems of Mexico would also disappear. Most Mexicans feel that if they can only encourage these squatters to GET OUT, their lives will be better. The solution is NOT to send them to the US. Maybe we can send them South to El Salvador or Guatemala where there really few jobs. It must be depressing to know that NO ONE wants the squatters but American Liberals---but not in my back yard. Mexico has Universities, engineersing, medical research but millions of freeloaders. Ask anyone from SudAmerica and they will tell you the most despised people are the Colombians and the Squatters from Mexico. See the Mexican movie "Y Tu Mama Tambien" to get a glimpse of the squatters "in action". Mexicans who despise the squatters are not racists.

Did we forget that there are ALL DIFFERENT kinds of immigrants and cultures that make up this great country? Dont get me wrong, I dont believe that everyone and their dog should be let in, but I do believe if the proper steps are taken than the doors to the pursuit of happiness should be open.

These stats are what edumacators have been dealing with for many years. American liberals love to spin the lie that illgal aliens are coming to the USA to "find work". Why is it that tens of thousands of new jobs are created each year in Mexico via outsourcing from US firms, yet these illegal immigrants can't find work? The main reason is the "big secret" of the liberal press. Middle class Mexicans want nothing to do with freeloaders also known as the paracaidistas (squatters). The squattters are chased from town to town because they refuse to be responsible. The squatters get "revenge" by sneaking into the golden land where even the poorest can live better than many middle class Mexicans. I have a lot of respect for Mexicans. What we view as "Mexicans" are the paracaidistas or squatters that Mexico does not want. I know many Mexicans who are embarassed by these people. Paracaidistas (parachuters), will swoop in at night and try to to a home invasion of working Mexicans. Thats why they glue broken glass to their fences to keep them out.

The point is, they didnt come here as citizens or knowing how to speak english. It's something that was worked towards. It's something that any immigrant has the potential and right to work towards. It's disheartening when the mistakes of some cast a shadow on all and that happens in all cultures.

It should have it's Federal funding pulled unless they can show our tax money is NOT going to illegal aliens.
