A $235,000 grant was awarded this month to help San Joaquin County put into place policies, programs and environmental changes aimed at improving health in the black community.

Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the grant will be administered by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and its local partner, the Stockton branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The funds are part of the CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health program, and will be used to develop and promote community strategies and policies that improve nutrition, increase physical activity and expand access to healthy foods in organizations serving black and low-income residents, according to a news release.
