Galt City Councilman Mark Crews' efforts to publicly welcome home local military personnel serving overseas received a recent financial boost.

Under a proposal approved last week, the city will pay up to $2,700 to purchase and hang banners on 32 city-owned posts recognizing military personnel. The effort is part of ongoing community promotion.

Crews said 14 of the 32 posts, mostly along A and C streets, are earmarked for troops with a known return date, while another 12 could be used as soon as this week.

More local troops are expected to return from deployment in March, according to Crews.

The cost for the additional banners and hardware to hang the banners is $2,685.

Crews started the program a year ago. However, he has depleted his discretionary fund account on other expenses, and asked the city to pick up the remaining tab for hardware to hang an additional 12 banners.

New Councilman Curt Campion requested $500 of his discretionary funds be put toward the effort.

The remainder will come from the city's general fund, according to City Manager Jason Behrmann.
