School begins today at most schools in Lodi Unified School District, but incoming seventh-graders and their parents got a head start on Thursday morning.

“Middle school should be fun,” Millswood Middle School Principal Sheree Flemmer told a multipurpose room full of students and parents. “There are only two reasons a student won’t succeed in middle school — they don’t show up, or they don’t do their homework.”

Flemmer gave an overview to parents as well as students about what they will face in middle school. Eighth-graders also led campus tours so that students and parents know where everything is.

“I was very impressed with her compassion,” said Susan Peterson, whose daughter, Katie, is beginning seventh grade today. “She’s teaching the kids to be organized and responsible for their actions. They tell you, ‘If you do this, this is going to happen.’”

Peterson referred to a “planner” that all students are required to use. They are to write in all their homework assignments, and teachers or other staffers will sign their name in the student’s planner whenever they violate school behavioral requirements.

If a student pushes another or does anything else in violation of school rules, it gets marked in the planner.

For that reason, Flemmer encouraged parents to read their child’s planner every day so they know what the homework assignments are and if their child broke any rules.

Katie Peterson said she didn’t mind student discipline being included in the planner, but that some students who get into trouble probably won’t like it.

Flemmer offered some colorful insight when it came to dress code. Emphasizing modesty, she said that girls are not allowed to wear tank tops or show their bra straps or bare midriff.

Or, as Flemmer put it, “When you’re getting dressed, look in the mirror, and if your father approves, you can wear it to school.”

Flemmer also commented on some boys’ preference to wearing loose, sagging pants.

“I don’t want to know what color your underwear is,” she said. “That’s too much information for me.”

Aimee Weidener, who has a seventh-grader starting school today at Millswood, was also impressed with how organized the orientation was.

“I like that they put the discipline in the planner,” said Weidener, a reading specialist in the Lincoln Unified School District.

Weidener’s husband, David, thought it was great that Millswood teachers are emphasizing organization and planning — “skills I don’t have.”

While Lodi Unified begins school today, other local districts begin considerably later. Oak View School in Acampo, New Hope School in Thornton and Arcohe School in Herald will begin on Aug. 15. Galt’s elementary and high school districts welcome students on Aug. 18.
