The driver of a car that crashed into a tree in Lockeford on Sept. 15 has died. Eugene John "Geno" Correa III, 22, of Stockton died on Sept. 22 at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

Correa and two passengers were injured when he crashed into a tree on Highway 88 near Blossom Court, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Correa was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus at about 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 15, crossed a paved shoulder, partially entered a drainage ditch on the south side of the highway and struck a tree, the CHP reported.

Correa and the passengers, Misty Karge, 24, and Heather Griffin, 22, were extricated from the car by Mokelumne and Clements firefighters.

Correa was a diesel mechanic at Rancon Trucking and enjoyed the challenge of repairing trucks, automobiles and anything that had an engine, according to an obituary notice from Cherokee Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Lodi.

He is survived by his mother, Christine M. Guadagnolo; father, Eugene J. Correa Jr.; life partner, Misty Mae Karge; children, Chevelle Giavonni Correa, Arianna Skye Correa and Eugene J. Correa IV; and grandparents, Annette Mary McBurnett and Thomas Edward McBurnett.

A celebration of Correa's life was held last Saturday.

Karge and Griffin were taken by ambulance to Kaiser Hospital in South Sacramento, according to the CHP. Karge was listed in good condition Tuesday, according to a Kaiser spokeswoman.

Griffin, who was discharged from Kaiser two weeks ago, said in a phone interview that Karge underwent surgery four times totaling 12 to 14 hours. Karge, Correa's girlfriend, has two broken legs, broken ribs and injuries to her spine and pelvic bone, Griffin said.

Griffin said she underwent surgery twice and has a broken arm, leg, shoulder and two ribs.

Griffin said she didn't recall the crash, even though the car Correa drove struck a tree.

"We didn't wake up during the crash. We woke up after," Griffin said.

Correa's death leaves Karge as a single mother with three children ranging in age from 1 to 6. Karge has supportive family members taking care of the children, Griffin said.

Karge is expected to be discharged from the hospital today if everything goes well, but she is unable to walk.

"She can barely move right now," Griffin said.
