Four men were arrested Sunday after an off-duty Stockton police officer said they assaulted him as he was attempting to detain one of the men for throwing a rock at his moving car.
At approximately 8:40 p.m., Lodi police officers responded to just outside Lodi Lake on Turner Road, where an off-duty Stockton police officer said he had been driving west when he saw three men acting strangely, according to the Lodi Police Department.
As the officer got closer in his car, one of the men suddenly threw a rock at the vehicle, hitting it.
The off-duty officer pulled over and approached the men, identifying himself as a police officer, Lodi police stated.
While the off-duty officer attempted to confront just the man who threw the rock at his car, two of the suspect’s acquaintances stepped in and became aggressive with the officer, according to Lodi police.
The officer said he told the men to back off, but then the other men stepped forward and began physically assaulting the police officer while two other men helped the suspect flee, Lodi police said.
Though the men did momentarily escape, the off-duty officer was able to give detailed descriptions of the suspect and the others he encountered, and Lodi police were able to arrest the four men after a short time.
The off-duty officer received minor injuries in the altercation, none of which were life-threatening, and he did not need receive medical treatment, Lodi police stated.
Eleno Durango, 18, Freddie Garcia, 23, and Tommy Vargas, 23, were arrested for public intoxication.
Cody Johnson, 20, was arrested for assault, damaging personal property, throwing a substance at a vehicle and public intoxication.
