Lodi police plan weekend DUI enforcement

The Lodi Police Department’s DUI enforcement team will be patrolling the city this weekend, ridding the streets of alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.

Officers conducting saturation patrols will deploy between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday in areas with frequent DUI collisions and arrests, Lodi Police Sgt. Shad Canestrino said.

“We want people to make it to their destinations safely,” he said, adding that this is a zero-tolerance crackdown.

Officers will also be on the look out for violations such as speeding and failing to yield, which are common causes of traffic collisions.

A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funds saturation patrol.

In California, drunk driving caused 791 deaths in 2010. In Lodi, it has resulted in 1 death and 82 injuries since 2011.
