A 16-year-old is dead and another juvenile is on the run after deputies said both escaped from a San Joaquin County juvenile justice center Thursday night.

San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies were looking for the two juveniles, who escaped the county jail’s Camp Peterson around 7 p.m. Thursday, when they found Tracy Brown Jr. laying unresponsive in a nearby field, Sheriff’s Chief Probation Officer Stephanie James said.

Brown was transferred to San Joaquin County General Hospital but died later that evening, James said.

The cause of death is pending autopsy and toxicology reports, but there were not obvious signs of trauma, James said.

Authorities are actively searching for the other juvenile, who is still on the lam, James said. His name is being withheld because he’s a minor.

The probation department hasn’t released any additional information.
