A man remains in critical condition after he was attacked and struck repeatedly with a hammer Wednesday night in Lodi.

At approximately 9 p.m., Lodi police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the 400 block of North Sacramento Street, where they found a 19-year-old man in the road, bleeding from the head, according to Sgt. Steve Nelson.

While the man was conscious and talking, Nelson said, he had been beaten repeatedly with a hammer.

The man was transported to the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South Sacramento, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Police arrested 20-year-old Ernest Herrera in connection with the incident, Nelson said.

Herrera has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and is being held on $25,000 bail.

Nelson said the invesgitation is ongoing, and that police are also searching for a possible second suspect.

Anyone with information on the attack is urged to call the Lodi Police Department at 209-333-6727 or Lodi Area Crime Stoppers at 209-333-6771.
