A man remains in critical condition after he was attacked and struck repeatedly with a hammer Wednesday night in Lodi.
At approximately 9 p.m., Lodi police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the 400 block of North Sacramento Street, where they found a 19-year-old man in the road, bleeding from the head, according to Sgt. Steve Nelson.
While the man was conscious and talking, Nelson said, he had been beaten repeatedly with a hammer.
According to AMR spokesperson David Durand, the man suffered blunt force trauma to the head as well as other injuries to his chest.
The man was transported to the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South Sacramento, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Police arrested 20-year-old Ernest Herrera in connection with the incident, Nelson said.
Herrera has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and is being held on $25,000 bail.
Nelson said the invesgitation is ongoing, and that police are also searching for a possible second suspect.
