Lodi's new Christmas tree is towering over the intersection of Oak and School streets, signaling the beginning of the holiday season.
Downtown Lodi merchants are prepping for Small Business Saturday, which is a campaign American Express started three years ago encouraging people to shop in their local communities. Downtown businesses plan to celebrate with a Holiday Open House on Saturday.
Stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and some businesses will offer giveaways, sales, door prizes and raffle tickets. Others are giving out complimentary refreshments or treats, and hiring musical entertainment. There will also be horse-drawn carriage rides available.
"We would like the focus to be a traditional, warm and welcoming holiday experience for shoppers," DLBP Executive Director Jaime Watts said.
People will be able to check out the new Downtown decorations this weekend, too.
At lunchtime Tuesday, employees from Acampo Tree Service used a bucket truck to lift a large tree into place, and the Downtown Lodi Business Partnership started decorating it.
The nonprofit organization will spend today finalizing holiday adornments, such as the light strings around the trees, Watts said. Local Boy Scout troops will add their decorations at all the intersection light poles as well.
