The Galt Joint Union Elementary School District is among 61 semi-finalists nationwide for the highly competitive Race to the Top grant, the U.S. Department of Education announced Monday.

If chosen as a finalist next month, the district plans to use the money for training stipends, supplies, equipment and services contracts, Superintendent Karen Schauer said earlier this year.

The school district is the only one in the area to have applied for the federal funding, according to Galt elementary school district board president John Gordon.

An estimated $400 million will be distributed across the United States to educational programs developed to personalize and deepen student achievement, improve test scores and prepare every student for college or career.

More than 370 school districts applied, although 900 filed letters of intent to do so in September.

Race to the Top district applications were randomly assigned to three-person panels that independently read and scored each application, according to the department of education.

Fifteen to 25 winning applications are expected to be chosen to receive four-year awards that will range from $5 million to $40 million, depending on the population of students served through the plan.

Awards will be announced no later than Dec. 31.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
