Adaptation is vital for survival, especially for small businesses during a recession. Weber's Cabinets, Inc., a family-owned operation in Lodi since 1972, is using an idea that came from extra pieces of cherry and maple wood to construct fashionable chopping blocks shaped like wine bottles. The blocks, which are functional and can also be used for decoration, have been purchased in bulk by Williams-Sonoma and will be available in stores soon.

The idea to make and sell chopping blocks came from Mark Weber, who would tell his daughter, April Morse, that they should look into it. His brother, Barry, made the first one, and the family knew it was something to market. Little did they know Morse's blog about being a woman in a male-dominated field and learning experiences in the industry would play an integral role. The marketing of the chopping block took off after an executive with Williams-Sonoma saw it on Morse's blog and became intrigued.

    Is it "in-grain" or "end-grain"?
