A state-of-the-art, 12,000-square-foot winery is under construction northwest of Lodi. Winery director Mike Shinn calls the Oak Farm Vineyards project a “wine and hospitality facility,” scheduled for a public opening by the end of this year at 23627 DeVries Road, north of West Peltier Road. It has a Lodi mailing address.

“There are a lot of wonderful wines being made in our appellation, Oak Farm included,” Shinn said in a news release, “but there really hasn’t been a single ‘destination’ as a focal point for visitors. We’re out to change that.”

Managing partner Dan Panella said, “Our vision is to offer guests a wine country experience that is without equal in the Lodi region. Think Napa quality, but with greater warmth and graciousness.”

Located on 60 acres, the wine and hospitality facility will include a 360-degree tasting bar, floor-to-ceiling vineyard views, a private room for wine club members, two indoor and two outdoor fireplaces, and a covered terrace.

A central plaza will link the tasting room with the 8,000-case-per-year winery, which includes a tank room, laboratory and barrel room, complete with chandeliers, that can be used for tours and special events.

Oak Farm Vineyard was designed by architect John Vierra of Delta Buildings in Acampo. Steve Nickell of Nickell Construction in Galt is the general contractor.

The winery is expected to be ready for production by the 2013 harvest, with the expanded hospitality area opening by the end of the year.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
